Hoesy Corona: Climate Immigrants January 3 – March 2, 2024 Hoesy Corona is a Queer Latinx artist who creates multidisciplinary art spanning installation, sculpture, textile, and performance. His practice delves into pressing issues of our time, exploring topics such as climate crisis, queerness, immigration, and race. Corona approaches these poignant subjects by creating fabulated narratives highlighting the complex relationship between humans and the environment. Lamont Gallery will feature a selection of artworks from Corona’s “Climate Poncho” series, an ongoing body of work that began in 2017. Made from brightly-hued, industrial weatherproof vinyl and leather, the works double as wearable sculptures. The archetype of the traveler is used in each poncho to depict ambiguous silhouettes, traversing through landscapes ranging from lush botanicals to coastal shores and mountainscapes. Each traveler is depicted in motion, carrying personal belongings via suitcases and backpacks, navigating through and adapting to the dilemma of climate-induced global migration en route to an unknown destination. While the artist intentionally uses silhouettes to obscure their identity and intentions, Corona invites the viewer to bear witness to their pursuit of a better life. Collectively, the works on view offer a powerful message from the artist to envision a future better than our present.
