Deconstructing Disney's Mythic Past
Lunchtime lecture with Mr. Kurt Prescott, Religion Department, Phillips Exeter Academy In his essay titled, Mythic Narrative and Cultural Diversity in American Society, Bruce Lincoln defines the word mythology as the stories that everyone knows and the stories that everyone has heard before. Indeed, when it comes to American society, no entity fits this bill better than that of Disney, as the stories of Cinderella, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and the Little Mermaid form the basis of a cultural canon that many Americans can easily draw upon. Yet, we must also ask what else is at stake in understanding the world of Disney as one that is deeply mythologized? Join us as we turn a religious lens toward the work of Walt Disney in our attempt to uncover the often invisible structures that shape the way we think, what we value, and how we live our lives. A light lunch will be provided. The program is free, but space is limited. Please RSVP by April 22 to gallery@exeter.edu.
