This week we're discussing whether to buy ORGANIC or CONVENTIONAL. The difference between organic and conventionally grown produce lies simply in how they are grown and processed.
Organic produce is cultivated without conventional or synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, GMOs, irradiation, artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives, which focuses on creating healthier ecosystems and environments for crops to thrive naturally. Whereas, conventional farming uses various chemicals like fertilizers, pesticides, weed killers, and genetically modified organisms to manage fertility, pests, and diseases.
Every year, the EWG (Environmental Working Group) puts out a list of the Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen.
The Dirty Dozen are deemed the 12 produce items that should absolutely be bought organic, as they've tested highest for pesticides, chemicals and more. The Clean Fifteen are deemed the 15 produce items that can be bought conventionally as they've tested lowest for pesticides, chemicals and more. This of course is personal preference, but helps for those on a budget as organic produce is often pricier than conventional.
