TRACES: An Encaustic Journey by Wo Schiffman
The encaustic paintings on wood in Traces: An Encaustic Journey by Wo Schiffman offer patterns inspired by explorations of fossils and microbiotic images. Using square wood cradled boards, Schiffman uses beeswax, tree resin and ground pigments to provide a grouping of brightly colored encaustic snapshots, each depicting the skeletal remains of life forms from a past existence. The patterns rise and fall into the depths of the mesmerizing layers of colored wax and the arrangement of colored “slides” provides an interesting tapestry of pattern and pure color. Wo will demonstrate encaustic technique and talk about the origins of the Traces show in this gallery talk.
This gallery talk and demo offers an opportunity to view the technique of painting with heated beeswax, tree resin and ground pigments and learn about the sources of inspiration for the ghostly skeletal images in TRACES, the Featured Artist exhibition at the SAA gallery during the month of June.
